Mee Gum Soo Hoo Obituary

Mee Gum SooHoo, of Boston, peacefully passed away on March 12, 2026. She was the daughter to the late Yip Fey Deng and Yue Hua Huang and eldest sister to Mein Man and Henry Wong. She married the late Shu Hoy SooHoo in 1940 and together they spent 68 years building a life for themselves and their children as proud residents of Boston and Newton, Massachusetts.

Mee Gum was affectionately known as "Ma" to the late Gin Lew SooHoo (May), Fay Chin (Brian), Kay Wong (Arthur), Gin Wing SooHoo (Tina), and Jane Lam as well as "Gnin Gnin" and "WhoWho" to grandchildren Karen Chao (Va Tak), Henry SooHoo (Michelle), Michelle Leanne Watkins (Michael), Alex Wong (Juliana), Marissa L. Laver (Jason), Jessica Lam Burke, Stephanie Parizher (Alexander), Brandon Lam, Tyler Wong, and Yvonne Ngo (Phuong) and "BuckBuck" to great grandchildren Kayla, Theryn, Mason, William "Liam", Hudson, Logan, Jaxon, Lucas, Blake, Avi, Devan, and Lior.

Mee Gum  will be remembered as a student athlete shooting baskets to win basketball games and sprinting toward the finish line at track meets, as a mother thriftily saving for a bicycle, roller skates, and the beloved encyclopedia set, as a grandmother with a big jar of buttons, daily trips to parks, and ready supply of Hoodsie ice creams in the freezer, and as a great grandmother joyfully returning high 5s to the delight of the babies.  She will also be remembered as a fierce advocate and helper providing guidance and support to others with her memory and impact reaching well beyond her immediate family. She once described herself as being like a "mouse" who explores and collects resources to share and bolster her family, friends, and community. Her legacy as a formidable matriarch continues in the athleticism, determination and diligence, intelligence, perseverance, service, and wit of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Her final years were filled with excitement and happiness at the Hong Lok House Adult Day Health Program where she looked forward to the birthday parties, crafts, friends and staff, and the warmth of her dear friend Bess.  Most recently, she reunited with old friends at South Cove Manor at Quincy Point and was lovingly supported by the caring staff.

Service and visiting hours at the Mann Rodgers Funeral Home, 44 Perkins Street, Jamaica Plain on WEDNESDAY, March 18th from 10:00 AM to 12:00PM.  Relatives and friends invited.
