FLORY L. GONSALVES Obituary
GONSALVES, Flory L.
In Loving Memory of Flory Gonsalves (née Almeida), age 102!
1923 – 2025
On October 1, 2025, our beloved matriarch, Flory Lolita Gonsalves (née Almeida), passed away
peacefully at the remarkable age of 102. Born on August 13, 1923, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Flory
or better known as “Flo” by almost everyone, was the third child of eight born to the late Olivia “Mai”
Fortes Almeida and the late Candido Almeida. Flo spent her early childhood growing up in the bustling
neighborhoods of the West End and later built her home in the close-knit community of Jamaica Plain.
Her life was a testament to courage, compassion, and unwavering love and she was selfless.
Flo’s strength was quiet but deeply felt. She faced the challenges of life with unshakable grace, always
grounded in her faith and her profound love for family. A proud graduate of Girls’ Latin School, she
valued education and perseverance—qualities she instilled in every life she touched. Her home was
never just a home; it was a haven. Through the years, she fostered and nurtured countless children—
family members, friends, and those simply in need of love and guidance. Every person who crossed her
threshold found warmth, laughter, and the steady assurance that they mattered.
Not only was Flo devoted to her family but also to work. She was employed as a Seamstress for a long
time at Maverick Mills making clothes and this carried on during her free time at home, always willing to
hem pants or take in a dress for family. Later she worked as a Home Health Aide for Helping Hands, a
company dedicated to matching elders with caregivers to assist with homemaking needs. For many
years, Flo had her very own mother as her client, which was very beneficial in many ways. She always
dedicated her life to helping others and retired from work in her mid-70’s.
Flo was a loving wife to the late James Fermino (married in the early 1940’s) and then later to the late
John Gonsalves (married in the early 1950’s). She was the devoted mother of Antonio Gucci, the late
Lolita Gonsalves, and the late Ricardo Gonsalves. Her legacy extends through generations, carried
lovingly by her grandchildren—her late grandson, Michael Gonsalves, granddaughters Nicole Martinez,
Michelle Isabel, Lolita Gonsalves-Alston, Bettina Gentile and Ariel Gonsalves as well as a host of great-
grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and
adoring family friends. To her family, she was not only a guiding light but a symbol of endurance and
unconditional love.
To know Flo was to feel seen, loved, and rooted. She gave endlessly—her time, her wisdom, her
strength—and in return, she built a legacy that will live forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
Though we grieve her passing and always welcoming smile, we celebrate her extraordinary life, Flo’s
spirit continues to guide us—steady, compassionate, and ever-present. She leaves behind a family bound
by her love and strengthened by her example. Her light will never dim; it simply shines onward through
all of us. Flo will rest in eternal peace, and her love endures in every life she touched.
Services to be held at Forest Hills Cemetery Chapel, 95 Forest Hills Ave, Jamaica Plain on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 11 sharp.
