DOUGLAS A. HALL Obituary

Douglas Hall, 89, of Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2026. Born on March 2, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the youngest son of Arthur Hall and Emma Eick and the beloved brother of Wendall Hall.


Douglas devoted his life to faith, community, and service. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology from Michigan State University in 1962 and a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from the same institution in 1964. He later completed a Master of Divinity–equivalent degree at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1977 in recognition of his pioneering work in urban ministry.


From 1965 to 2015, Douglas served as Executive Director of the Emmanuel Gospel Center, where he became a visionary leader in the integration of faith and community transformation. Through his visionary leadership at the Emmanuel Gospel Center, Douglas championed holistic urban ministry and community development, fostering collaboration among churches, organizations, and neighborhood leaders to promote justice and renewal in Boston and beyond. He also served as Professor of Urban Ministry at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary from 1973 to 2013, mentoring generations of students and leaders.


Douglas is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Hall; his son, Kenneth Mark Hall, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Springer Hall, and their three children, Caleb Maverick, Asher Legend, and Naomi Trinity; and his daughter, Rebecca Ruth Hall, and son-in-law, Ken Anderson. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Wendall Hall.


His life will be celebrated in two chapters. Chapter One: Viewing and Goodbye will be held on April 27, 2026, at Bethel AME Church, 100 Wachusett Street, Boston, MA 02130. Visiting hours will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a closing time of reflection and prayer from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. Chapter Two: Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, with the location to be announced.


Douglas Hall’s legacy of faith, compassion, and dedication to urban communities will continue to inspire all who knew him.
