DEMETRA BOWERS Obituary
BOWERS, Demetra
Demetra “Becca”, “Demi” Bowers exited life on Earth on 11/16/24 at the venerable age of 94. She was born on 1-15-1930 in Dorchester, Massachusetts to John Kalafatas and Rebecca Savopoulos Kalafatas. Following World War II, the family purchased the mansion at 64 Sumner Road, Brookline, Massachusetts. As a teen, Becca was known to climb out her window there and descend the trellis for adventures in Boston with friends. She graduated from Brookline High School in 1948. Becca was proud to have worked as an administrative and research assistant to a pathologist named Dr. Driscoll at the Lying Inn Hospital researching thalidomide-damaged newborns. As a night club singer, Becca met and married Winston “Pinky” Irwin, a Juliard-trained pianist who accompanied her for 20 years. Following his death, she met and married Lawrence “Larry” Bowers and helped raise her stepsons Bruce and Kenneth Bowers. The family owned a farm in Brookfield, Massachusetts where she enjoyed raising a variety of farm animals and pets, including a pet turkey, the subjects of many entertaining stories. They also enjoyed their home on a lake in Gray, Maine, and travelled extensively to Mexico, Morocco and the Caribbean, yielding more stories. After selling these properties, they bought a two-house property overlooking the water in Onset, Massachusetts where Demetra spent many years enjoying the birds and flowers. Becca and Larry were married for 24 years, divorcing in 1999. With music ever part of her life, Becca composed a song, “And Life Goes On”, words and lyrics by Demetra Bowers, arrangement by Eric Kang. An avid reader, she could hold her own on most topics.
Becca was predeceased by her parents, her Uncle Christos Savopoulos, her 5 siblings: Nicholas (Helen) Kalafatas, Ann (Charles) Larouche, Demitris Kalafatas, Vassiliki “Bessie” (Nicholas) Papas, and Peter (Joy Lee) King and by her nephews John (Maureen) Kalafatas, Jeffrey Larouche and Matthew Papas, and her two husbands Winston Irwin and Larry Bowers.
She will be dearly missed by her cousin Michael (Joan) Kalafatas, by her nieces: Roxane Larouche (Richard Albano), Stephanie Larouche, Irene (Arthur) Baer, Dianne (Joe) Bourque, Rebecca Papas; and by her nephews: Bill King, Russell (Andrea) King, Paul Papas, Chris Papas, Andrew (Demetra) Papas, John Michael Papas, and her many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was everyone’s favorite aunt.
Becca was one of a kind who lived life to the fullest, and always on her own terms.
