Dear Callahan Family & Friends,
I’m Michael Gimbrone—a member of Alice’s “second, extended family” of friends & co-workers at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, where she worked for three decades, and has left such a lasting mark.
Each Life is a Journey—one that is made all the more special by the company of those who share in it…
It was September 15th 1980 when Alice accepted a part-time secretarial position in our Vascular Research Laboratory here at the Brigham. We were a relatively small group then—a couple dozen or so investigators and technicians, but were destined to grow to become a Division, and then a Center, with almost a hundred people working together on understanding cardiovascular disease. And, Alice’s role grew to be my senior administrative assistant (though truth-be-known, I often felt I was working for her).
For Alice—it wasn’t about the excitement of the science we were doing (although she had a very inquiring mind)---it was all about the PEOPLE.
She was the one who greeted each new trainee on their first day—helping them get off to a good start, making sense of the administrative maize they needed to navigate, even helping them get their family settled, and then, like a mother-hen, keeping track of what was going on in their lives via daily, hall-side chats, and sometimes quietly letting me know when someone needed a little extra help…
For three decades, she did this for scores of fledgling scientists—many of whom went back to their homelands to become professors and to lead their own research groups. And, when I would meet them at some international conference, each could recount how Alice had made a difference in their lives, and would make a point to visit her when they came back to Boston.
But, Alice’s fan-club was not limited to these youngsters—for several decades we have had a special Harvard Medical School Vascular Biology Seminar series, and would invite thought-leaders from around the world to speak at it. Behind the scenes, Alice quietly took charge of all the organizational details. And, when I would get follow-up notes from these guests, they each would speak in glowing terms about this charming woman of Irish descent who had made their stay in Boston so special!
Of course, the ones who were truly blessed were us--- Alice’s co-workers and colleagues in the Vascular Research Division, or our “VRD Family” as it came to be known. We were the ones who benefited, on a daily basis, from her big heart and buoyant spirit! She touched the lives of each and every person working in the VRD, and was its special envoy to the rest of the Brigham and Harvard Communities.
I will remember fondly the time I shared in the company of this genuinely caring person—and am thankful for her generosity of spirit and the calming influence she had on my Life’s Journey.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Gimbrone, Jr. M.D.

I worked with you at BWH in my very first job out of college. You were so kind, caring and welcoming to me. You will be missed. May your memory be eternal.
