Jamaica Plain:  Sixto Gonzalez, 82, passed into heaven on Saturday, July 15, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Aida Toledo Gonzalez, to whom he was married for 55 years.

Born and raised in Lares, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Encarnacion Gonzalez and Juan Borrero, and lovingly raised by his step father Flor Feliciano. In 1955, he left his cherished island and set out to work in agriculture in Philadelphia. After six months of working he returned home to look for a bride. The following year he met the woman who would become his wife and mother to his three children: Miriam, Israel, and Haydee.

With barely a sixth grade education and no knowledge of the English language, he set off to Massachusetts with both his bride and a sunny outlook for their future. They lived in Roxbury for a short period of time before finding the perfect home in Jamaica Plain in 1972.  He worked various jobs, although one in particular would give rise to his independence and financial stability. Sixto began driving a cab in 1962 and in 1969 became the owner of one of two of his current Boston taxi medallions: Toledo Cab and later Haydee Cab, Inc.

There was no greater joy for Sixto than to have the opportunity to create financial freedom and success. His perseverance and dedication to the service industry would allow him to provide for his family.

 An avid domino player, he could be heard slamming dominos on the table while yelling out CHUCHAZO and jokingly arguing with his opponents. His spirited comments, debates, and radiant smile won the hearts of many people. He loved his three children unconditionally and found the most joy in the simple things.

He is survived by Aida, his daughters, Miriam Gonzalez of West Roxbury, Haydee Gonzalez of Melrose, son Israel Gonzalez of Roslindale. He’s also survived by his brother, Santo Gonzalez, and his wife Iris of Dorchester, as well as loving nieces, nephews, stepbrothers and sisters.

His wake will be at the Mann & Rodgers Funeral Home, 44 Perkins Street in Jamaica Plain on Tuesday, July 18 between 5 and 8 PM.  A Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 97 South Street, Jamaica Plain will be held on July 19 at 11am. A Christian burial, at Forest Hills Cemetery, will follow the Mass.
